Behind the Mask: A Fencing Coach’s Heart-to-Heart with Parents

As fencing coaches, we spent years putting on the mask, stepping onto the strip, and feeling the unique thrill of this sport. Now, our passion has shifted. Our days are spent watching your children grow from tentative beginners into confident, strategic athletes.
Fencing is often celebrated as "physical chess," and for good reason. But what many people don’t see from the sidelines is that the real transformation doesn’t happen because of a coach alone, or because of a child’s raw talent. It happens through a powerful, quiet partnership between the coach, the athlete, and the parents.
Today, I wanted to take off the mask and share a few honest, heartfelt thoughts on how we can work together to help your child truly thrive—both on the strip and in life.

1. Consistency is the Secret Ingredient
We completely understand how packed family schedules are these days. Between school, social lives, and a dozen different activities, life is a balancing act. But here is a gentle truth from the gym floor: progress thrives on routine.
When a child attends their fencing class consistently, they aren't just learning to score a point; they are building muscle memory, focus, and grit. Just like school homework, the small assignments we give them to practice at home make a world of difference. When a family prioritizes training consistency, the child immediately senses that their effort matters—and that's when the breakthrough happens.
2. Fueling the Body and the Mind
Fencing requires incredible explosive power, balance, and quick reflexes. Because it is so physically demanding, how our athletes take care of their bodies outside the gym changes everything.
A balanced diet and proper rest keep our fencers agile and, most importantly, safe from injury. Alongside physical health, we also look to parents to help instill a growth mindset at home. Teaching kids that mistakes are just data, and that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard, is the greatest armor they can wear under their fencing gear.
3. Character is Built in the Little Moments
Long before a fencer wins a regional tournament, they win our respect through sportsmanship. The values of respect, discipline, and accountability always start at home.
When a child remembers to greet people when entering the gym, thanks their training partners, and shakes hands with the referee—even after a tough loss—we see a true champion in the making. Our goal is to help them become independent problem-solvers. When they make a mistake on the strip, we encourage them to look inward and ask, "What can I adjust next time?" rather than looking around for someone to blame.
4. Trusting the Process
Every child’s athletic journey has its own unique timeline. Some kids grasp footwork instantly; others take months to perfect their blade work. Both paths are completely normal.
One of the greatest gifts a parent can give their young fencer is the space to fail safely. When a tournament doesn't go as planned, they don't need a technical critique on the drive home—they just need a parent who is proud of their courage. Trust your coach to handle the hard critiques and the technical adjustments during their fencing class. Your job is to be their biggest fan, their safe harbor, and their cheerleader.
